We were very sad to hear about the death of pioneering photographer & proto feminist Grace Robertson.
Grace Robertson was born in Manchester in 1930 and brought up in the Lake District and Surrey. She began her career as a freelance journalist contributing often to the Picture Post and then later to the British picture magazines, Illustrated and Everybody’s. She was married to the photojournalist Thurston Hopkins.
Grace Robertson was a pioneer in recording the lives of women and her series about childbirth was ground breaking at the time. Her 1950s women’s pub outing series is particularly joyous.
The Michael Aldrich Foundation supported her gorgeous book and retrospective A Sympathetic Eye at the University of Brighton in 2002. Grace Robertson was a keen supporter of the arts at the University, attending the annual Graduate Show well into her 80s.
